We had an AWESOME day today!  Look for a white paper in our red folders telling all about the awesome experiments we did.

The pupas are still in their cocoons.  The cocoons are different colors and shapes.  They are trying to be butterflies and they want to come  out.

Last week we planted some lima bean seeds.   Each of us has our own cup with three seeds.  We learned that plants need water or rain, sun, and soil.  We can give them vitamins or fertilizer to help them grow.  Our cups are sittng next to the window because they need sun.

Tomorrow is the Science Extravaganza!!!!!!!!  We are going to wear tennis shoes, shorts, and our Science t-shirts tomorrow.  We made bracelets out of beads but we don't know why.  AR

Yesterday Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Fox put the chrysalis' in the butterfly garden.  The butterfly garden has plastic on the top and bottom and netting on the side.  They had to be very careful so they would not fall off and die.  The caterpillars (called pupas now) are wiggling a bit in their chrysalis'.  They are green and brown in color.  Some day they will turn into butterflies!

Now 4 caterpillars are in their chrysalises and 1 is hanging upside down.  They were hanging in a “j” shape but now their chrysalises are shaped like a pickle or an eye.  They are not moving and they cannot eat their food.  They molted so black parts of their bodies are in the bottom of the jar. Their chrysalises are orange, yellow, light brown and black.   They are about to be butterflies in two weeks.  We read that butterfly’s wings have scales on them, but they are not reptiles.  Butterflies are insects.  We love butterflies so much!

We can see the caterpillars moving around more than yesterday.  They are eating more.  Sometimes two eat at one time.  Their skin looks tighter.  Over the night they grew longer and a little fatter.  They are making silk to walk on, like a web.  They look prickly and their spikes are getting bigger.

Today we got a box of 5 caterpillars in the mail!  After watching them and reading the instructions in the box, the students looked through many books about caterpillars.  We came up with a list of things that the students already know about butterlies and a list of questions that they have.  Enjoy!

What we know about butterflies:
-Some are poisonous
-First butterflies are eggs, then caterpillars, next pupas, then they hatch and the butterflies rest to dry their wings, last they fly away!

-A monarch butterfly is the king of all butterflies.
-A butterfly is bigger than a caterpillar.
-Butterflies are big insects.

My plan is for this blog to have many authors- each child in the class!  The children will take turns being daily news reporters and photographers.  They will post their work during Center Time and at the end of the day.  My hope is that families will use these posts to talk about school with their children and help develop the important connection between home and school.  I encourage parents and children to respond to the blog or Dinner Discussions by adding a comment or emailing me.  Have fun and I hope this opens a window into our world at Creek View!
